DOMINIK SYMONOWICZ's blogs - FOREVER HUNGRY of knowledge, sarcasm, smiling, music, dancing, and food ...lots of food. This IT blog is a collection of notes with a simple solution with an explanation, added documentation, sarcastic comment and weird example. I also write about a lesson learnt from my mistakes. "Date class however has numerous flaws: (...) It does not represent... date. Seriously, officially date is "[...] the day of the month or year as specified by a number [...]" whereas in Java it represents point in time without any specific calendar (day/month/year). It has 20+ deprecated methods, including getYear(), parse(String), and many constructors. These methods are deprecated for a reason, because they lead you to believe Date represents, you know, date."

"As a human being, you're multithreaded. You can type with multiple fingers, you can drive and hold a conversation at the same time. The only blocking function we have to deal with is sneezing, where all current activity must be suspended for the duration of the sneeze. That's pretty annoying, especially when you're driving and trying to hold a conversation. You don't want to write code that's sneezy."

" In the last years I’ve developed pretty large Single Page Applications with various frameworks or, when in a rush, mostly a mess of badly organized Javascript code that vomits jQuery calls here and there. "

"For some reason Front End developers never seem to be considered the most senior. As though hacking WPF or HTML/CSS was somehow less worthy. In fact, I think the front end is the most important part – it’s where all your wonderful n-tier architecture and multiple redundant geegaws finally meets users. And without users, everything else is just intellectual masturbation."

This is probably the best explanation of UI.

"The line speed is already around 75 mph and the higher you go the harder it gets for a smaller reduction in time. Indeed increasing the maximum line speed has been described as “the Jeremy Clarkson approach to rail improvement”."

"Of course there are worse complexities than n2, like:n4: that sucks! Some of the algorithms I’ll mention have this complexity.3n: that sucks even more! One of the algorithms we’re going to see in the middle of this article has this complexity (and it’s really used in many databases).factorial n : you’ll never get your results, even with a low amount of data.nn: if you end-up with this complexity, you should ask yourself if IT is really your field…"

"This is also the reason why we prefer autocratic rulers rather than democratic ones: we know we talk more than we act. To get things done, we prefer an autocrat to rule over us rather than exercise self-discipline as democrats. All our successful political parties are one-person shows. "

"Reduced train service from Liverpool Street. Customers are asked to note that there will be a reduced train service operating on services out of Liverpool St to Chingford, Cheshunt via Seven Sisters and Enfield Town today due to an unexpected shortage of drivers."

Interesting reason to change code ...
"
"
Source:** 2006-10-31: The default prefix used to be "sqlite_". But then
** Mcafee started using SQLite in their anti-virus product and it
** started putting files with the "sqlite" name in the c:/temp folder.
** This annoyed many windows users. Those users would then do a
** Google search for "sqlite", find the telephone numbers of the
** developers and call to wake them up at night and complain.
** For this reason, the default name prefix is changed to be "sqlite"
** spelled backwards. So the temp files are still identified, but
** anybody smart enough to figure out the code is also likely smart
** enough to know that calling the developer will not help get rid
** of the file.
